Article Summary
Aluminum, stainless steel, PVC or polycarbonate? Each material has specific applications. Here is how you choose.
Choosing the material for an industrial nameplate is not aesthetic — it is functional. The wrong material means a nameplate that degrades prematurely or does not resist the use environment.
Aluminum — the standard choice
Anodized aluminum is the standard material for industrial nameplates for several reasons: - Light (important for large surfaces) - Corrosion resistant without additional protection - Ideal surface for engraving and UV printing - Moderate cost - Available in various formats
Limitation: Not suitable for environments with strong acids or concentrated bases.
Stainless steel — for aggressive environments
Stainless steel 304 or 316 for severe conditions: - Chemical industry with mild to moderate corrosives - Food industry (stainless 316 for salt solutions) - High temperature environments - Outdoors with severe weather exposure
Limitation: Higher cost, laser engraving on stainless steel requires optimized parameters.
PVC — economical and light
Rigid PVC for indoor applications without extreme conditions: - Information panels - Instructions and procedures - Internal identification (shelves, offices)
Limitation: Cannot withstand high temperatures, UV degrades colors without special treatment.
Polycarbonate — impact resistant
Polycarbonate (PC) for applications with impact risk: - Safety signs where impact resistance is critical - Environments with impact or vandalism risk
Limitation: Harder to laser engrave than aluminum or PVC.
The practical decision
- Indoor, normal conditions** → Anodized aluminum
- Outdoor or moisture** → Anodized aluminum or stainless steel
- Aggressive chemicals** → Stainless steel 316
- Cost priority, indoor** → PVC
- Impact risk** → Polycarbonate
