UV printing vs laser engraving — when to choose which marking method

5 min read·10/01/2025

Article Summary

Both methods produce permanent markings on metal and technical plastics. The difference is in what you prioritize: color and graphics vs extreme durability.

Companies that need markings on metal or technical plastics face the same question: engraving or UV printing? Both are permanent, both are quality — but for different applications.

Laser engraving: absolute durability

Laser engraving physically modifies the material surface — it removes material or changes surface structure. It cannot be removed without destroying the material.

Advantages: - Resistant to any solvent or cleaning agent - Never fades or discolors - High temperature resistant - Tactile (felt when touched) - Ideal for critical traceability information

Limitations: - Monochrome (contrast variations, not colors) - Can create subtle effects on some materials

UV printing: colors and graphics

UV printing applies UV-curable ink directly to rigid surfaces. Adhesion is excellent, UV and moderate wear resistance is good.

Advantages: - Full color, including photographs - Complex graphics without limitation - Fine reproducible details - Flat surface, aesthetic

Limitations: - Less resistant to severe abrasion than engraving - Aggressive solvents can affect over time - Not tactile

The optimal combination

Many customers choose the combination: engraving for critical text (serial number, identification data, required warnings) + UV printing for graphics, colors and branding.

This combination offers both extreme durability for essential information and visually premium appearance.

The practical decision

Choose engraving if: information must resist any conditions, you work with solvents, high temperatures or abrasion.

Choose UV printing if: you need colors and graphics, surface is not exposed to extreme conditions.

Choose the combination if: you want the best result and will not compromise.
